Anglo-Saxon Silver Penny of King Canute (Cnut) struck at London by the moneyer LEOFRED. It is of the pointed helmet type (c.1024 - c.1030 AD).
Obverse: Bust left wearing a pointed helmet, with a sceptre in front, royal title around: +CNV-T RECX A, (Cnut King of the English)
Reverse: Short Cross voided, limbs united at base by two circles; in centre, a pellet; in each angle, a broken annulet enclosing a pellet, moneyer/mint name around: +LEOFRED ON LVN: (LEOFRED of London)
This is a well-struck round coin, however, it has circulated within Viking territory and has a few peck marksand flan crack but is stable!
Cnut was King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death in 1035. The three kingdoms united under Cnut's rule are referred to together as the North Sea Empire.
