Ancient Roman Silver-gilt Intaglio Ring of Sol (Helios) on Horseback
This is a fabulous ancient Roman silver-gilt intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd century A.D. The intaglio is cut on a banded sardonyx gemstone, layers of mottled white and orange. It depicts Sol (Helios) the sun god, astride a horse, raising one hand in greeting and the other a whip. It is a superb looking ancient piece of wearable ancient jewelry, retaining a full luminous mercury-gold gilding.
