This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 2nd century AD. The form and decoration of this ring fit the Henig Type II classification, dating to 'the second half of the first century and the early years of the second century' (Henig, 1978, p.47), c.AD 43-175. The gem is of red jasper, engraved with a standing figure of the goddess Minerva, holding spear and shield. It is a nice example, intact with the original intaglio and in good excavated condition.
