This is a wonderful medieval silver amulet/pendant, dating to the 15th - 16th century. It depicts Saint Christopher Carrying the Christ Child across a river with the water lapping about his ankles and his staff. His most famous legend tells that he carried a child, who was unknown to him, across a river before the child revealed himself as Christ. Therefore, he is the patron saint of travelers. Such an amulet would have been worn by Pilgrims or Merchants who traveled and required his protection. This example would have been secured to a chain or necklace through the arms (where it joins to make a loop). It is a nice example in very good condition and can still be worn again today!
