Charles and Joanna of Spain Aztec Gold Escudo Coin
This is a superb Spanish gold Escudo of Charles and Joanna, minted between 1535 - 1555 A.D. It is a perfect example of a hammered gold coin, likely struck from the plundered gold of the Aztecs! The first Escudo (Shield) was struck in gold from the 'New World', brought back by the Conquistadors and Treasure Fleets.
