This is an ancient Roman agate hardstone cameo, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century A.D. The cameo is cut on a grey/white layer of the agate, against a brown contrasting background. It is a well-sculpted piece, with good facial features and the classic drilled eyes giving a depth of gaze. Being an ancient gem it bears traces of burial, with a chip to the nose and a few ancient fissures to the stone. Such a gem would have once been set into a gold ring or pendant.
