This is a charming ancient Roman Nicolo gemstone intaglio, dating to the late 1st - 2nd century A.D. The gem is nicely cut with an image of a strutting Cockerel (Rooster). Such a gem would have been mounted within a silver or gold signet ring, used as a private signature for sealing documents and letters.
