Ancient Roman Rock Crystal Intaglio Cockerel & Hen
This is an ancient Roman rock crystal intaglio, dating to the 1st century A.D. It is cut with a scene of a mating cockerel and hen! It is a rare subject, popular during the Augustan period of animals, birds and rural life. Such an intaglio would have been set within a gold or silver finger ring, used as a personal signature for sealing documents and letters. The gem has patches of patination from thousands of years buried in the ground. Today this intaglio would look great remounted into a gold finger ring or as another treasure for your collection.
