This is an ancient Roman military P-shaped brooch, dating to the 2nd -3rd century AD. The brooch is made from iron with a sprung pin and catchplate. Such pins were used to fasten woollen tunics and fleeces around armour and mail. The brooch is a strong example designed for heavy-duty work. Ideal for soldiers on cold, wet outposts in Britain! An excellent example in good excavated condition. Rare in iron to have survived intact!
