This is an ancient Roman silver Miliarense of emperor Magnus Maximus dating to 383 - 388 A.D.
Obverse: DN MAG MAXIMVS PF AVG "Our Lord Magnus the Great, Dutiful and Wise Augustus" pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right gazing heavenward
Reverse: VIRTVS EXERCITVS "Courage of the Army" emperor, in military dress, standing right, head left, holding labarum with hook on staff in right hand and resting left hand on shield
This coin was minted at Treveri (Trier, Germany), mintmark TRPS. It had travelled across the English Channel, being buried in the Thruxton Hoard. This coin was purchased directly from the finder after being disclaimed by the British Museum.
