This is a fabulous Renaissance embroidered silk and velvet Orfroi, dating to the 16th century AD. The central design depicts the Annunciation with archangel Gabriel giving the news to Mary, who is kneeling in prayer. There are at least four kneeling and standing figures of monks or holy people in front of Mary but they are very much faded. The Orfrey is an embroidery design made with gold and silver threads, silk and velvet. Different textiles were used such as garnet-coloured velvet, yellow, green and blue silk. The cartouche is surrounded by a frieze embroidered with gilded threads, then around the edge by a frieze alternating ribbons and foliage. Such a beautiful work would have covered a precious chalice or silver reliquary. This example has plenty of age, with the hand-painted facial features on the silk fading away with time, some of the silver and gold threads are lost commensurate with its age. A good piece suitable for display!
