This is an original vellum page from a book of hours, dating to the early 15th century. The page is from the Workshop of the Bedford Master, with characteristic detailing on the borders (see another sold at Christies) of acanthus flowers and gold ivy leaves, with 14 lines of text, the verso with 14 lines of text, ruled spaces.
It is a lovely and original illuminated page from a Book of Hours. Complete with burnished gold jewelled initials in gold on red and blue grounds. The parent manuscript included Taurinus, bishop of Evreux and Ouen of Rouen in the Calendar and was for the use of Rouen; for context see also one from the RAAB collection. This example ends with a rubricated time of Nones the Ninth Hour, or Midafternoon Prayer. This page retains Psalm 27 referencing the Tabernacle as a place of shelter and safety. It also contains prayers to the Holy Spirit and intercession of the Virgin Mary. "Blessed Glorious Prayer always of the Virgin Mary: and most high almighty God: that her glorious intercession may protect us: and unto life"
