The mint at Durham was an ecclesiastical establishment, the profits of which were normally due not to the King, but to the bishop. English Benedictine monk Richard Kellawe was elected as a bishop of Durham on March 31, 1311 and served in this capacity until his death on 9 October, 1316. Coins struck under his authority are known to have a mark as a crozier-end on one of the arms of the reverse cross. In the 19th century, a grave identified as his was excavated in the Durham Cathedral Chapter House. He was the last Benedictine monk to ascend the Episcopal throne.
