This is a portrait miniature on parchment, finely painted with watercolours. It appears to be a study or draft for a much larger portrait. The hand is very competent, capturing the sitter in a relaxed pose, perhaps in good conversation and among friends. The sitter is a very elegant noblewoman, attributed to Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern, Queen of Prussia. She was the wife of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia Elector of Brandenburg. Such a miniature would have been housed within books, or perhaps gifted (to be latter cut and framed by the recipient).
