This is a magnificent Georgian gold cameo ring, dating to the late 18th century. The solid 18k gold ring is set with a beautiful Neoclassical chalcedony cameo of a lady. She is likely based on an actual sitter or ancient Roman marble portrait of an empress. On the Grand Tour, it was fashionable to have one's portrait immortalized in stone, sculpted onto a gemstone being an appreciation of classical antiquity. I had originally thought the portrait to be of empress Lucilla, but it appears too sophisticated for an ancient work, thus sold as unresearched. A fine cameo ring, of excellent artistic merit and quality.
