This is a superb medieval bronze seal, dating to the 15th century. The seal is of a 'chessman' type with a trefoil handle. It is nicely cut with a knife emblazoned on a shield, signifying his profession as a cutler. The legend is inscribed in a Blackletter script, reading as " S * guilliame * de * garlen *" This would translate as "the seal of William De Garlen?" The seal was purchased from an old collection formed in Strasburg; it is in excellent condition with a nice patina.
