Code: 12905
This is a rather unusual English medieval lead seal, dating to the 12th century. The large, round face is decorated with a standard flag depicting a Templar Cross. It is engraved with the name of its owner in Norman capital script, reading as: + SIGILl GERARD FIL ABILIE (the seal of Gerard son of Abel). These knights took solemn vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, dedicating their lives to the order's mission. Since this seal is made from lead, it is soft and easily damaged. The seal was recovered from the Thames in London, originally folded in half, preserving the intricate detail and clear inscription.
The cross on this flag clearly depicts the Battle-Flag of the Knights Templars. I have not seen another quite like this seal, with a clear, well-defined standard, so perhaps it signifies that its owner was a Standard Bearer in a unit of the Templars? The Templars were active in London during the Crusades; their headquarters were at Temple Church, not too far from where this seal was found in Holborn.
This is a rare and exciting find worthy of further research. The seal was originally found folded in half; it had been opened by the finder, resulting in a crease and fold visible on the surface. The back of the seal has been repaired, but it is stable and a nice collectable item.
