Medieval Vessica Seal depicting Saint Francis of Assisi

Medieval Vessica Seal depicting Saint Francis of Assisi

This is a wonderful medieval bronze seal dating to the 13th century. The design is deeply cut, giving a crisp impression of a standing figure of Saint Francis of Assisi; he is preaching to the trees, birds and animals. The engraving and artistic quality is very "period" and reminiscent of a miniature illumination. Two long-horned cattle represent the animals. The inscription in Lombardic script reads as "S'Thome:De.Sco:Marcello.Pari". it is a wonderful seal, boldly engraved with an artistic subject that may have once belonged to an early Franciscan. It is intact with a wonderful apple-green patina. A great seal and worthy of further research!
