Silver & Glass Eros Cameo Ring

SOLD

Code: 10128

This is rare Renaissance silver cameo ring of Cupid, dating to the 16th century. The ring bears traces of gold gilding in places. The molded glass cameo originally had foiling beneath, this would have shone through the glass giving the cameo an ethereal appearance. Today the foiling has dimmed slightly due to the action of being buried within the ground, for almost five hundred years. It is still an impressive piece, though quite difficult to make out the design on the photographs. Cameos during the 16th century became a fashionable statement of taste and refinement, especially after the excavation of the Roman ruins, which brought many priceless ancient treasures back to the world. It is likely this cameo was given as a token of love, with Cupid representing the embodiment of desire.
