This is a nice Renaissance gold intaglio ring, dating to the 16th century. It is a lovely example, set with an ancient Roman garnet intaglio of a Rooster. The gem is mounted into a tall quatrefoil bezel, decorated with crescents. Such a ring would have been worn by a wealthy aristocrat, as a (the Rooster a symbol of hope and faith) was often used the royal house of Valois and the Bourbon kings of France. The gem is in very good condition. The ring is slightly squashed to one side caused during burial, has a light crack but is stable and wearable today.
