This is a gorgeous early 18th-century gold mourning ring, dated 1709. The inside band engraved with a memorial to "R.W. obt 14 Mar 1709 aet 49". This refers to R.W. who died on the 14th of March in the year 1709, aged 49. It bears the makers mark of J.C. in Gothic script, attributed to Joseph Collier, a goldsmith of Exeter. The bezel is set with a rock crystal, displaying hair and elaborate gold thread with initials. Such mourning rings became popular after the execution of King Charles. Royalists wore mementos of the king in finger rings, known as Stuart memorial pieces. These were often associated with royalty or nobility.
