This is an ancient Roman gold pendant, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century A.D. The bow-shaped pendant is decorated with a simple emerald glass bead, of the type produced in Alexandria in Egypt. Emeralds were extremely expensive and highly desirable, thus versions in glass were produced that imitated the natural emerald crystals. This example still secured by the original gold wire, knotted in place. It has a large suspension loop, likely to pass through a Roman gold chain. A great object in excellent excavated condition, a suitable jewel to be worn again today.
