This is a wonderful ancient Greek gold brooch, dating to the 5th - 3rd century B.C. It is of a cruciform shape with beaded wire borders, applied granules with filigree collars, central cell inset with a gem. The back of the brooch retains the original catch and loop for a pin, enabling the jewel to be safely worn today as a pendant. It is a nice looking piece, well designed and of fine quality gold. This is the type of jewels worn by aristocratic ladies of Athens after the conquests of Alexander the Great brought back vast quantities of treasure from the East.
