This is a very rare Renaissance silver-gilt hat jewel, dating to the late 15th - early 16th century A.D. The jewel is complete and all original, including the split-pin on the back (to secure the jewel to the hat). These hat jewels were fashionable among the nobility, worn through the hat (above the eye) by gentlemen and the aristocracy.
This jewel is set with a foiled glass ruby, held within a rubbed over collet mount. The body of the jewel is produced in filigree work, built up to form a budding rose. It is surrounded by a frame of heart-shaped floral bursts, set with enamel. The pin is still splayed over, as when first mounted into a hat. This explains why so few of these hat jewel is ever found, the securing mechanism (so simple yet effective) is strong and secure.
It is a fabulous and rare early hat jewel, of the type worn at the Yorkist and Tudor court.
