Roman Military Gold Intaglio Ring of Minerva

SOLD

Code: 10210

This is a wonderful Roman military gold intaglio ring, dating to the 2nd century A.D. The gold ring is made from three beaded wires joined and fused together to form the band (a similar ring sold at Christies in 2010 can be found here). The bezel is mounted with a dark sard/carnelian intaglio of Minerva. It is set into a decorated bezel made up from beaded wire and granulation work, it is missing two out of the original eight granulations (applied at the shoulders). The ring is solid, intact and comfortable to wear. Such a ring would likely have been worn by Roman Centurion or Officer in the Imperial Army. A nice British ring from an old collection.
