This is a substantial Renaissance silver-gilt signet ring, dating to the 16th century. The ring is large and heavy, designed to be noticed, worn as a mark of rank or badge of office. The bezel is cut with an armorial device with initials H.R / M.R. above. The letters are in 'Roman Capitals' (quite worn). The arms depict a pair of flails, crossed in a saltire. This ring is possibly Scottish or English (as it was found in the UK) my feeling is it originated from Italy and brought over during mercantile trading.
The ring is an excellent example, very large and impressive. Such a signet would have been worn by a wealthy merchant or nobleman. Used to seal and authenticate letters and transactions.
