This is an ancient Roman intaglio, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. It is nicely cut on a tiny carnelian gemstone, with an image of a pair of clasped hands. The hands are joined in agreement, used as a symbol of fair trade. This gem would have once been set, into a signet ring, used to seal and authenticate letters and transactions by a merchant. Today this ancient gem has survived down to us in good condition (tiny chip to the back), it is suitable for remounting into a gold ring - or to add to your collection.
