Roman Emerald Green Chalcedony Intaglio Horus Harpocrates

SOLD

Code: 10232

This is a nice ancient Romano-Egyptian intaglio, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. The gem is cut on a nice chromium chalcedony gem, with a representation of a young Horus. During the Greco-Roman period, Horus was also known as "Harpocrates", a rendering from Egyptian Har-pa-khered or Heru-pa-khered "Horus the Child". At his feet is cut a tiny falcon, again a reference to Horus. The green of the chromium would have placed this chalcedony in the same category as an emerald. During this period seven types of green gems were classed as variants of the emerald. This intaglio would have originally been set into a gold signet ring, used to seal and authenticate letters and transactions. Today it is suitable for remounting by a competent jeweler.
