Carolingian Frankish Bronze Signet Ring of a Fleur

SOLD

Code: 10259

This is a nice Frankish bronze signet ring, dating to the 9th - 10th century A.D. The round bezel is cut with a fleur-de-lys, set within a double border. The shank of the ring is plain, simply attached to the bezel. This type of ring was in use during the late Carolingian empire, used as a signet to seal and authenticate letters. During this period signet rings were seen as the only suitable ring, to be used and owned by men. The Fleur-de-Lys symbol on this signet is an early variant, first adopted by Clovis on his conversion to Christianity in the early 6th century A.D. The ring is intact with a nice apple green patina
