Early Skeleton Band Gold Mourning Ring

SOLD

Code: 10301

This is a rare type of mourning ring, with a decorated skeleton band in black enamel. The ring bears a memorial to "Remember mee E.t. ob 22 nov 1718". This refers to the deceased with E.T. initials who died on the 22nd of November in the year 1718. I have carried out research into the date, but with only initials finding the likely person is a lot more speculative. One possibility is an Edward Thatch or Edward Teach, better known as 'Blackbeard', he was an English pirate who was killed on this date and year 1718.  The inside band has no makers mark, it could also have been resized at one point. The ring is rather scratchy and worn in places, with some loss to the enamel on the band. An interesting piece worthy of further research.
