This is an ancient Scandinavian Viking silver finger ring, dating to the 9th - 10th century A.D. The ring is formed from three graduated rods of silver twisted together, the terminals hammered and welded to form a complete round ring. This example is a good piece of Viking age jewelry, worn as both wedding and oath rings. The two rods a metaphor for two lives entwined in a union, or as an 'oath ring' for the subject and his Jarl's fates inextricably linked as one. Today this wonderful piece has survived the centuries in wearable condition, with a natural patina from the excavation.
