Roman nicolo intaglio paste of Salonina and Gallienus

£195.00 Approx $245.9, €227.54

Code: 10374

This is an excavated ancient Roman intaglio, dating to the 3rd century A.D. It is cast in layered blue and black glass, with two facing portraits. These represent Emperor Gallienus and his wife Empress Salonina (an Imperial medallion of them in the Met can be seen here 34.1387). Such a glass gem would have been set into rings, worn to demonstrate support of the Imperial Family, or to signify loyalty and favor. Today this intaglio has survived intact, with minimal wear as one expects in pastes. A nice portrait intaglio, seldom encountered of this Imperial Couple.
