This is a superb late Medieval / Renaissance silver gilt Tau cross pendant, dating to the late 15th - 16th century A.D. This example is intact, still set with a pearl. The suspension loop intact along with the original mercurial gold gilding.
The Tau cross is known as the cross of St. Anthony, worn by the Knights Hospitallers and those seeking healing. A 15th-century example in gold is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1990.283a, b).
This example was likely kept locked away in a chest, it is an original piece in excellent condition.
