Charles I Silver-gilt Seal Top Spoon Salisbury 'B' Type Finial

SOLD

Code: 10390

This a fabulous Charles I provincial silver seal top spoon, likely from Salisbury c. 1630 - 1640. The spoon has a Salisbury ‘B’ type seal as illustrated by Kent on p.14 of ‘West Country Spoons and their Makers’, with a silver gilt nimbus engraved with a worn crest. The seal top is joined to the stem with a ‘lap’ joint, and the tapering hexagonal stem and fig-shaped bowl are of beautiful proportions. The bowl bears a secondary and much later family crest, indicative of this piece being gifted as a christening gift (as was the custom). A very handsome and rare example, worthy of further research.
