This is a superb portrait miniature on vellum, laid onto a playing card. It is finely painted with watercolours and gold gilding, with a representation of an armoured gentleman. He has been identified as John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough . The portrait is set within an ormolu frame of Rococo design. It has an inventory in ink on the back, this is researchable. Originally this piece was acquired by a private collector from Althrop, sold during renovation works by Raine Spencer, thus may have been known to Princess Diana as a child. A great quality item, worthy of further research
