Ancient Roman Wrestling Erotes Garnet Intaglio

SOLD

Code: 10443

This is an endearing ancient Roman garnet intaglio, dating to the 2nd century A.D. It is a tiny gem, intricately cut with a pair of wrestling Erotes. This would represent Eros (god of love) and Anteros (the god of requited love). The gem is only around 4mm in size, the gemmarius has managed to cut in good detail a pair of winged Cupids, both wrestling each other in a playful manner. The gem has survived intact with no chips, cracks or damage. Originally set into a gold finger ring, likely once presented as an amorous token. A wonderful yet tiny work of art!
