This is an ancient Roman carnelian intaglio, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century A.D. It is nicely cut with a depiction of the god Apollo playing the lyre. It is a nice piece, originally mounted into a gold or silver signet ring, worn to gain the patronage of this god of music and art. Today the gem has survived to us in excellent condition, suitable for remounting into a gold finger ring or to add to your collection.
