This is a rare Merovingian / Saxon period gilt signet ring, dating to the 6th - 7th century A.D. The bezel is decorated with a raven beside a branch, as a pagan ring it may symbolize Odin, or a Christian ring the dove of peace. The engraved image is quite shallow, so unlikely used as a seal (especially with the granulated shoulders). The gold gilding is mostly worn but retained within the recesses (giving a nice contrast with design). It is a very nice and showy ring, designed to be noticed. It has survived in excellent excavated condition and can still be worn with care!
