This is a complete medieval bronze heraldic pendant, dating to the 14th century A.D. The pendant is set with blue and red enamel, with traces of the original gold gilding. The arms depict 'a barry of ten or and gules on a canton azure a lion rampant or'. These have yet to be attributed to a knight. Such a pendant would have acted as a banner, mounted onto an iron bar - attached to a carriage or a 'chars branlant' rather than leather horse harness. It was designed to be viewed from both sides. This type of pendant was also used as a vervel on leather jesses by falconers. A much rarer pendant than one usually finds. In good excavated condition.
