Renaissance / Tudor Silver Cross Pendant

SOLD

Code: 10500

This is a nice late Renaissance silver cross pendant, dating to the 16th - 17th century A.D. The cross is formed from a silver drum, decorated with an IHS Christogram, with the reverse side having a MARIA monogram. The arms of the cross are formed as ships anchors, this may signify "Hope" (Hebrews 6:19 (KJV) 19) "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;".  The anchor was seen as a symbol of hope in future existence because the anchor was regarded in ancient times as a symbol of safety.

This cross is an excellent example, with the original suspension ring, displaying natural wear from centuries of devotional use. An excellent and wearable historic piece, from the age of Queen Elizabeth Ist, Shakespeare and the Spanish Armada!
