Medieval Silver Penny of King Edward I Berwick-on-Tweed

This is a medieval silver penny of King Edward Ist. It was struck at the Berwick-on-Tweed mint between 1296 - 1307 A.D.  It is produced from local dies, class 4b. Lombardic "E" on obverse and Roman "E" on reverse. Obverse: Facing bust with pellet on breast : "EDWA R ANGL DNS hyB". Reverse: "VILLA BEREVVICI". These were issued after Edward I had taken Berwick from the Scots in the massacre of 1296. The area remained so unstable that local moneyers produced dies for the coinage rather than continuing with the standard issue of the series. The coin is a detector find from Kent.
