Anglo Saxon Gold Beaded Wire Finger Ring

SOLD

Code: 10515

This is a nice Saxon period gold finger ring, dating to the 6th - 7th century A.D. It is produced from two bands of beaded wire, fused together as a single ring. This may imply the ring to have been worn as a wedding band, used as a metaphor for two lives 'joined as one'. The ring is quite small, so likely intended for a lady, or to be worn on the upper joints of the finger. Similar beaded wirework rings appear to have been used as a decorative element on jewellery (see NARC-BD1E51) but most of these are single rings. In my opinion, this piece is a small ladies wedding band of an Anglo Saxon date.
