This is a rare Scandinavian Viking silver amulet, dating to the 9th - 11th century A.D. It is shaped as a stylized hammer, known as a 'Mjölnir' the hammer of the god Thor. Hammer amulets were worn by pagan Vikings seeking the divine patronage and strength of Thor, especially useful for a warrior seeking Valhalla! This example is decorated with rows of punch-work. The suspension loop is drawn out of the handle, hammered over and joined with a single rivet. Similar pendants have been recorded NMS-8E57D8, LIN-D3E540, NLM-1A6811A and LEIC-185125. A nice historical piece of masculine jewellery, in good excavated condition.
