This is a large Saxon period gold pendant, dating to the 8th - 10th century A.D. It is produced from a sheet of gold, decorated with fine wire and granulation work. The bezel is set with a dark carnelian gemstone, this is a replacement as the original gem was missing. Similar pendants have been recovered set with dark garnets, carnelian and glass pastes. This pendant has a single piercing, either for a wire suspension hoop, or for riveted attachment. Fine granulation work is found late Saxon period jewellery, see LON-3478C7 and PAS-D681D8 for further discussion.
