This is a nice English medieval silver-gilt iconographic ring, dating to the 15th - 16th century A.D. Rectangular bezel with median longitudinal arris dividing two concave fields, the arris continuing through the shoulders at an angle, the band narrowing towards the rear. The shoulders either side of the arris is decorated with engraved sprays of petalled flowers and leaves, the bezel engraved with the Holy Family, Mary, and her mother Anne. Many similar decorative and iconographic rings are known, including Oman (1974) pl.22, B - E and pl.66, A - E, and an example in the collections of the British Museum (museum number AF.915). 15th century. See also GLO-A3DF57 , LIN-00BB62 and ESS-BA4146 for discussion. This example is in good wearable condition, intact with no restorations or damage. The silver has darkened around traces of the original gold gilding. It appears most of the coloured enamels are missing, this is usual with such rings.
