This is a rare Baroque gold devotional pendant, dating to the 17th century A.D. The pendant is decorated with hand-painted Verre Églomisé panels on rock crystal. One side with a representation of a young John the Baptist (holding the Lamb of God) the other Saint Barbara holding a tower. The form is very abstract, small and hand painted behind the crystal. It shows great age and some possible water damage from a river or the sea. The gold frame is good, only having a small dent (to the high carat and soft yellow gold). A nice jewel used for private devotion and prayer. During this period St. Barbara was eagerly patronized since she gave protection from 'sudden death' especially though explosions, lightning and of course gunpowder. She would have been a prime saint to have on board a ship, especially with privateers roaming the seas!
