This is an ancient Saxon period electrum gold pendant, dating to the 6th - 7th century A.D. It is of piriform shape, hollow and decorated with fine filigree work. The pendant retains a large corrugated suspension ring, enabling the piece to be worn on a chain. Such pendants were worn on a graduated collar/necklace, by elite females as badges of wealth and status. This example has survived in good condition, with minor losses to the filigree. It is light and well-wrought from a pale gold electrum.
