This is a wonderful Renaissance silver mounted pectoral cross pendant, dating from the mid 16th to early 17th century. Such a crucifix was designed to be worn on a long chain around the neck (so that it rests on the chest) worn especially by bishops, abbots, and priests. The body of the cross is made from wood (possibly olive wood) decorated with pontile work, with geometric pattern and letters of a name. The terminals of the cross are mounted with silver collets, decorated with the same geometric design. The suspension loop is intact and retains the original silver ring. Today this pendant is in excellent antique condition and can still be worn.
