This is an ancient Roman sardonyx cameo of Eros, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. The gem is finely cut on an orange layer, with a darker red layer utilized for the field. The cameo represents the youthful head of the god Eros, god of sensual love and desire (his Roman counterpart was Cupid). Such a jewel would have once been created as an amorous token, to be set into a gold finger ring or earrings. He was likely excavated during the 18th century, acquired on a Grand Tour and set into this handsome 22k yellow gold finger ring. It is a wonderful wearable treasure, in excellent antique condition.
