Roman Silver Intaglio Ring Gryllos Magical Gem

SOLD

Code: 10695

This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 2nd - 3rd century AD. It is set with its original jasper intaglio, cut with a representation of a Gryllos. It has the body of a cockerel with the head of Silenus, at the top is a protome of a horses head. It is thought these gems were worn for protection and had apotropaic qualities. This example has survived within the original mount, though has a light crack that appears stable. The intaglio would have acted as a private signature, to authenticate letters and transactions.
